The Cursor
It blinks.
That's all it does. One beat on, one beat off, patient as a metronome, indifferent as a clock. The cursor has no opinion about what you build. It doesn't know you used to be good at this.
You were, though. There was a period—you remember it the way you remember a particular summer—when the ideas came in faster than your hands could follow. You were building something. You could feel it. The architecture was alive in your mind before it ever touched a screen, before a single line of code was written, before the first sentence found its verb. The work had momentum. You had momentum. And the thing about momentum is that you don't notice it when you have it…

First comes the inventory of lost days. All those mornings the ideas wouldn't come, all those afternoons you mistook distraction for research, all the versions of this project that existed vividly in your imagination and then quietly didn't.
Then comes the comparison: who else is building, who else is shipping, who woke up this morning and simply did the thing while you were staring at a cursor.
Then the verdict: something has broken. The channel is closed. Whatever you had, you've spent it.
The indignation arrives late, like a second wave. It's almost welcome. This is absurd. You've done harder things than this. You've solved problems that looked like walls and turned out to be doors. You've shipped work that you were certain was unshippable. The anger has edges, and edges feel like something, and something is better than the white.
But the anger passes too.
And then there is just the room, and the screen, and the cursor.
And here is the thing no one tells you about the cursor: it isn't taunting you. It's just marking time. It blinks when you have nothing, and it will blink the same way when you have something, and it will not celebrate the difference.
The waiting is not judgment. The blinking is not contempt.
The block is not a verdict. It's a weather pattern.

Not more thinking. Not more effort.
